dear people of tumblr, i just want to let you know that this is not okay:
it really irks me when i see people who are outside of my culture/race/heritage/etc use day of the dead makeup and such as halloween costumes. i don’t attempt to speak for everyone, but i know i’m…
Then if this is true, no offense intended, then every other recreation of anything relating to anyone else’s culture is wrong? I’m sure people don’t do this type of thing specifically to ‘insult’ your culture.
baby’s first introduction to cultural appropriation:
not everything that is borrowed from another culture is bad. culture appropriation can be neutral or positive, for example, there’s some really fucking awesome music coming out of some Native Americans blending their traditional music with African American hip hop + rap.
However, it is bad when appropriation of the material ignores the original context and disrespects the original purpose, especially when the person appropriating belongs to a culture that has historically shit all over from who they’re taking from. The original poster is saying that to dress up as a sugar skull on halloween as a costume is a disservice to the actual purpose of respecting the dead in a time-honoured cultural tradition.
For the same reason, white people should not wear Native head dresses. Our race murdered, raped, enslaved, and tricked Native Americans for hundreds of years, we don’t then get to wear a very significant head dress (or dress up as Pocahontas etc) because we think it looks cool.

I saw 3 ooold old dudes running with fanny packs today and thought it was hilarious, but I guess they’re the ones not carrying all their junk in a bra
